I’m a pretty internal person, but my whole role is to create the externalities of things. How does that work? Isn’t that wrong? Shouldn’t we all be past the external, and stop judging a book by its cover?

It seems like, societally, we’re not there yet. The good news is, for us internal sorts of people, there is a way to reconcile all of this focus on the external: to make sure that there is something inside. Meaning – if we take the internal concept, and just reflect that out into externality – that’s actually awesome. Because then, really great concepts or products or ideas that aren’t getting their turn to shine can be drawn out and easily digested by the outside world. Basically, the external should be a proper vehicle for the internal content.

At least, that’s the aspiration. Practically, sometimes you just need to make something look nice, and make sure that the content you’re designing is something that makes the world better.
